Happy in this country forget that Mendelssohn's oratorio Elijah, like Handel's Messiah, actually is an English oratorio. The first performance in 1846 at the Birmingham Music Festival was a great triumph for the composer. Richard Hickox, the English original version recorded in 1989 for CHANDOS and impressed with a fine singer ranks, among other things, Willard White and Linda Finnie belonged.
